Fans of retro gaming will be rubbing their hands with glee at the news that Activision classic River Raid has been relaunched for iPhone, iPad and Android users. The highly addictive Atari shoot-’em-up which had thousands of gamers stuck to their screens back in the 1980’s, has been given a 21st-Century makeover. Now, those Atari and Spectrum gamers can relive their youth, while a new generation of fans can sample a true gaming icon.
Original River Raid fans can rest-assured that the game stays true to its Activision roots, and this new version will take them right back to those good old days. It’s an epic nostalgia trip which will bring out the child in all of those gamers who knew RR the first time around, and it’s guaranteed to transport gamers right back to the first day they ever played it and couldn’t put down their joystick.
The formula of the game remains true to its 1980s origins. As the pilot of a jet fighter you traverse the world’s rivers (yes RR fans, in this version there is more than one ‘World’ to enjoy!), protecting the world from the bad guys, blasting enemy ships, balloons and helicopters into oblivion.
Refuelling stations appear every so often, giving you the opportunity to fill up on much-needed juice, and as you progress up the river the action becomes more intense, with enemies appearing more often and opportunities to refuel decreasing rapidly. Just like the original it’s still a game of accuracy and speed.
As well as cutting-edge graphics and sound, the controls are also slick, with two buttons placed at the top left and right of the screen for taking shots, while the movement of the iPad or phone takes over manoeuvring, and the fact that the game can now be downloaded onto your phone or iPad means you can now take River Raid with you wherever you go. You never have to be without your favourite game again!
