The next generation of consoles is primed to enter the MMO realm, with the latest console MMO announcement coming out today for the PlayStation 4 (PS4). Gaijin Entertainment announced this morning that their military MMO “War Thunder” will make its console debut on PS4 this holiday season.
War Thunder, which has already been played by 1.5 million players and is now in open beta, will provide PS4 players a first-person gameplay experience that allows them to engage in World War II battles from the air, mobilized on the ground, or out at sea.
War Thunder for the PS4 will be optimized for the console, with Gaijin Entertainment saying they will “optimize the potent power of PS4 … to redefine rich gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative cloud options.”
So, what we can take from all that jargon is this: there will be social tie-ins, cloud storage and next-gen graphics.
War Thunder will feature real-time precision in the details of its planes, tanks and war ships. It will also use the full capabilities of the DualShock 4, presumably meaning a certain element of motion-based controls and touchpad recognition for certain gameplay elements.
What’s most interesting, though, is this quote from Gaijin: “The power of PS4 will allow developers to include improved head-tracking system, easier socializing tools, smart and easy options to record, stream and share homemade gameplay videos and will have full support of PlayStation Cloud.
Head-tracking system? Sounds intriguing, and definitely something that we look forward to learning more about at E3.
“We’re convinced that our cooperation with Sony will not only make the War Thunder franchise better, but it will give our fans a new level of gaming experience that will figuratively blown their mind,” said Gaijin Entertainment’s Creative Director Kirill Yudintsev.
A mobile version of War Thunder is also under development.
