Xbox Live may have had some connectivity issues this holiday, but darn it if gamers weren’t trying to connect online anyway. Between Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, gamers have demanded increased online functionality and, if the furor over the Xbox Live issues is to be believed, they want a reliable connection to their online friends network.
Normally this “consistent connection” element relies upon a reliable router and a good broadband connection. But what if a company found a way to deliver a high-speed Internet connection to any room in the house without the use of a router or a WiFi card? And just for good measure, what if that secure connection delivered speeds of 200 Mbps? Well a company called Corinex has found just that, and they’ve debuted their GameNet product at CES 2008.
GameNet creates a secure 200 Mbps connection using mobile adapters that plug in to any run-of-the-mill electrical outlet in your house. With one adapter plugged into your modem and a nearby outlet, the other adapter can be plugged into any other outlet in your house and, using the existing electrical wiring in your home, create a fast, stable connection between the Internet and any Ethernet-enabled console. GameNet can even connect multiple consoles together during LAN parties.
GameNet is designed for use with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 (PS3), Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox (if anyone still owns one). After plugging the second GameNet adapter into the console’s Ethernet port, the adapters automatically configure themselves. And, since the GameNet uses existing electrical wiring and doesn’t involve a WiFi card or Cat-5 cables, the adapters can be moved from room to room or outlet to outlet without harming the online connection.
We took some time out of our CES schedule to chat with Corinex VP Marketing & Business Development, Brian Donnelly, about GameNet. You can read our full interview with Donnelly by clicking here.
GameNet is available starting today for $169.99. You can order it here (and for a slight discount) on Amazon.
