San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers already has the league’s fourth-best Total QBR (78). After today’s 4:05 EST home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on CBS, he could very well jump up to number two or three. That’s reason enough right there to watch today’s Jaguars Chargers game live. Oh, and the fact that rookie quarterback Blake Bortles will get his first career start for the Jaguars.
Through three weeks Jacksonville has allowed opposing quarterbacks to hit an average passer rating of 110.3 while lighting them up for 39.7 points per game. Rivers is already on track to be one of the NFL’s leading quarterbacks for the second straight season. Going up against such a porous defense, particularly against the pass, should only help him pad his stats further.
The 0-3 Jaguars have been outscored by 75 points to start the season, so it wasn’t surprising to see them throw in the white towel last week in the second half so rookie QB Blake Bortles could get some reps. Turns out, Bortles will be the Jaguars starting quarterback for today’s Chargers game live, so Jacksonville must have seen something they liked.
If it wasn’t the fact that he couldn’t do any worse than Chad Henne, who delivered just 10 points in two games, it could have been Bortles’ mobility. Former starting QB Henne was never the most agile quarterback, having been sacked on 17% of his drop-back passes. That’s partially the fault of the offensive line, but Henne’s concrete boots didn’t help. Bortles will stand a better chance of escaping San Diego’s defense, but whether “a better chance” is the same thing as “can pull it off” remains to be seen.
San Diego has the NFL’s ninth-best pass rush, even though the Chargers have already lost Melvin Ingram and Manti Te’o. In his first start, Bortles will surely have a few butterflies that the Chargers pass rush will look to swat. Knowing that, Las Vegas has the Jaguars as 13-point underdogs going into today’s Chargers game.
