The Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console gets an oldie but a goodie today, as Nintendo announced that Space Invaders: The Original Game will appear on the Wii Virtual Console today. The game, which technically appeared under that name on the SNES, will be joined online by two new WiiWare games.
Space Invaders: The Original Game (800 Wii Points) is a perfect rendition of the arcade classic, with players taking aim at the field of invaders relentlessly marching toward them. Using the barriers for protection, players must avoid missiles fired by the aliens and try to destroy all of them before they reach the bottom of the screen. There are also several modes available that simulate different versions of the arcade game, such as upright cabinet or black-and-white. There’s also a new Versus Mode that sees who can stop the alien invasion the quickest.
The two WiiWare games are Strong Bad Episode 4 and Target Toss Pro: Bags. In Strong Bad Episode 4 (1,000 Wii Points), players assume the role of Dangeresque, a dirty cop in pursuit of a little action and several big sacks of cash. Can he stay alive long enough to defeat his arch-nemesis, save the world and get the girl? That’s up to you.
The second WiiWare release, Target Toss Pro: Bags (700 Wii Points), is based on beanbag toss (sometimes called “Cornhole”), which originated in the Midwest in the 1960s and has since become a staple at outdoor social events. In Bags, players try to toss beanbags into a hole in a slightly raised platform or “box.”
