PlayStation 3 owners have had months of full stereoscopic 3D content on their consoles, most notably via all those 3D Blu-ray movies that are now available. But 3D movies on the PS3 are no longer just a thing for Blu-ray. Any PS3 owner who has downloaded the VUDU app to stream movies will now be able to watch their streamed movies in stereoscopic 3D too.
For those who have already downloaded the VUDU app, it will be updated automatically with the new functionality. No patch download or anything else is required. For PS3 owners who hadn’t downloaded the VUDU app yet, the 3D update will be included in the new download.
And, when the user downloads the free VUDU app and signs-up for a VUDU account, VUDU will credit their account $5.99, which is enough to get an HDX rental.
It’s not clear whether all VUDU streamed movies are available in stereoscopic 3D (read: whether the service “fakes” it) or whether it’ll only displays movies that have a legitimate 3D version. If you download a VUDU 3D movie yourself and want to share the experience, feel free.
