Wing Commander is making an appearance on a next-gen console this summer, but it’s not in the form many gamers might have expected. Wing Commander Arena, in development for Xbox Live Arcade, will support up to 16 players in multiplayer combat, the largest multiplayer support for an XBLA title to date.
Wing Commander Arena will feature eight maps and four styles of play: single-player, multi-team, multiplayer free-for-all and multiplayer duel. Regardless of the mode, the gameplay in Wing Commander Arena will be fast-paced space combat in which players can team up to attack other teams of ships — a new arcade-style approach to the classic franchise.
Players will be able to customize their ship, fire torpedoes and unleash deadly gravity bombs. Among the things the online leaderboard will track will be frag count, high score and dueling success.
