PS3 owners who are also would-be superheroes have a new online game ready to sate their appetite for all things spandex, as Sony Online Entertainment has released DC Universe Online on the PlayStation Store. DC Universe Online released for PC in January and became the fastest-selling game in SOE history. With that sort of a warm reception, it’s likely that more than a few PS3 gamers will be excited by this news too.
DC Universe Online is available for download for $59.99 USD (plus applicable taxes). The purchase price includes 30 days of gameplay, with a subscription fee of $14.99 per month after that. A six-month subscription is available for $77.99 USD, while a 12-month subscription can be had for $134.99 USD.
The PS3 release of DC Universe Online includes all the new content and updates that have been released for the PC version since its release in January. That new material includes new missions, new character items and new content related to the Catwoman-themed update from February and an upcoming Two-Face themed update.
DC Universe Online is the first MMO based on the DC universe to offer physics-based action combat on the PS3. Players can create their own hero or villain and join forces with other players online, as well as DC icons like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Joker and Lex Luthor in an epic battle to save (or conquer) the universe.
Although it’s an MMO and thus very open-ended by its nature, there is a plot in DC Universe Online, and it goes like this. Lex Luthor has traveled back through time with news of a dire future: While the heroes and villains spent years battling amongst themselves, Brainiac has been feeding on their powers, building strength to return to Earth and destroy humanity. To change the future, Lex has come back to set off a device that bestows super powers to thousands of every-day citizens and give humanity a fighting chance. Can Brainiac be stopped, or is this another nefarious Lex Luthor plot?
