A new survey from RetailMeNot indicates that 87% of Americans are still doing at least some of their Christmas shopping. Walmart is one of the companies hoping that survey is true, as the retailer today announced the biggest Walmart PS4 shipment of the year is hitting stores this Sunday, just in time to cap their major weekend sale. The sale, which started at 8am this morning, includes what Walmart said were Black Friday-like prices.
With Black Friday doorbusters and online sales the big winner this year, it’s no surprise to see a major Walmart Christmas sale hitting just two weekends before everyone pops presents under the tree. What is surprising about the news is the related note that the new Walmart PS4 shipment coinciding with the sale represents the retailer’s biggest PS4 allotment of the year.
With the PS4 having shipped one month ago and with Black Friday in the books, it’s interesting that Sony has sent Walmart its largest order of PlayStation 4 consoles at this point. The Walmart PS4 news also shows that the sales momentum Sony gathered in November should very well continue well through the end of the year. Sony yesterday announced that its PS4 was the top-selling console for November and was tops in sales overall for home consoles.
The big Walmart PS4 shipment will arrive at stores across the country starting at 8am Sunday (Dec. 15). Customers can also visit Walmart.com for PS4 consoles while supplies last. The PS4 shipment is part of Walmart’s Christmas Countdown Savings Event, the first time the retailer has held such a sale. As part of the Black Friday-like sale, Walmart is dropping prices on popular toys, electronics, apparel, table games, gift cards and more to mark 12 days until Christmas.
Some of the discounts customers can get during the Walmart Christmas Countdown Savings Event in stores through Dec. 24 include and Apple iPad mini Wi-Fi 16GB for $299 (also includes a $50 Walmart gift card), the iPhone 5C ($27) and 5S for $127 (requires a two-year contract from AT&T or Verizon), and select Xbox 360 and PS3 video games such as Call of Duty Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, GTA 5 and NBA 2K14 for $39.96. The latter video game sale is also available on Walmart.com.
Walmart does not appear to include any discounts on Xbox One or PS4 games as part of the new sale. But the fact that the big Walmart PS4 shipment hits Sunday will be welcome news to would-be PS4 owners who are tired of paying a premium on eBay. Walmart did not announce whether they would be getting a new Xbox One shipment as part of their big Christmas sale.
