Blockbuster Video today announced it’s getting into the console sales arena, an attempt by the movie-rental chain to increase its revenue by selling next-gen game consoles.
Blockbuster’s expansion will let customers buy games, hardware and accessories for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo DS at all U.S. Blockbuster stores.
The offerings won’t just be limited to consoles alone, though. Blockbuster, like Costco, will offer special bundles such as an exclusive PS3 bundle that includes a 40GB PS3, a remote control, an HDMI cable, Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray, a copy of the Transformers game and a three-month Blockbuster rental card — all for $499.
All Blockbuster stores will also have dedicated game sections and an increased number of games available for rent.
Blockbuster’s news is no doubt timed to coincide with the midnight release of Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA IV), which will certainly be one of the biggest launches of the year.
