It’s Monday today, which means Nintendo is releasing new titles to its WiiWare and Virtual Console platforms this morning. As was the case last week, WiiWare is getting two new Nintendo Wii games, while the Virtual Console gets one old-school title, this time from the NeoGeo.
First, the WiiWare games. Block Breaker Deluxe (800 Wii Points) is a Breakout-like game that’s being billed as “a reinvention of the classic arcade brick-breaker game with a trendy graphical style, fun atmosphere and an exclusive multiplayer mode.” The game’s settings include a bar, dance club and casino, among others. Special bricks and multiple bonuses join the ranks of genre-trusted secret weapons, paddle-size options and ball-speed variations.
Cocoto Fishing Master (700 Wii Points), meanwhile, lets players travel the world to find five millennial fish that can stop the magic cauldron from overflowing with lava and thus preventing the world from being destroyed. Yeah, we never realized it was so important to fish, either. Using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk like a real fishing rod, players must catch more than 30 different fish in five lakes (that reside in five different worlds). Gigantic bosses, once defeated, give up a fragment of the statuette that will allow players to wake the great god Geo from his slumber.
So, now that you’re thoroughly confused, let’s move on to today’s Wii Virtual Console game, shall we? Samurai Showdown (900 Wii Points), which originally appeared on the NeoGeo, is this first entry in this popular fighting-game franchise. Players can choose from 12 swordsmen and ultimately confront the evil Amakusa Shiro Tokisada. Each character wields his or her own specific weapon, which players can lose during the heat of battle. Some of the fighters also bring an animal companion into the fray. Another feature is the anger gauge, which, if it reaches its maximum level, gives players an attacking-ability boost.
