Mental calculation might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about board games, but TrioMath for iPad is about just that. Developed by inFocusmedia iFoM AB, TrioMath builds upon a concept by CJ Pedagog. The game is for 2-5 people who compete against each other in mental calculation and strategic thinking.
The basic concept is about classic mental calculation where the competitors, with the help of the four operations, collect game pieces. The competitive element enters the picture as players compete against each other when collecting the pieces from the game board in order to be the first one to achieve a certain amount of points, or to get the most points in a certain space of time.
The strategic thinking is stimulated through the different values of the pieces, which depends on how many pieces lay adjacent to the chosen one. There are also bonus pieces, which makes it so that the easiest calculation isn’t always the best one to go with in order to win. TrioMath can also be played alone and then in order to improve one’s own result on the leaderboard.
TrioMath is a game that combines business with pleasure, by collecting knowledge and creativity from both developers and educators. “As a special education math teacher I’ve been using a paper-version of TrioMath in my classes. An app-version adds new dimensions and reaches out to many more users. Math should be fun and everyone can improve their mental calculations.” – Christer Jennemyr / CJ Pedagog
