Reviewing cases is something that’s a little tricky to do – even moreso than games in my opinion. On one hand, people can start to get a good feel for a particular reviewers tastes when it comes to games, and then make judgement calls based on how other opinions lined up. Cases though are something that people buy one or at most maybe two of – while some gamers won’t buy any at all so how can you form an opinion with so few data points?
The CM4 Catalyst is a case that’s is meant to be put on your 3DS and stay on it. It’s an extremely well designed two piece item that fits very snuggly on your system. The case is made out of aluminum and then expertly wrapped in a soft leatherette with no issues on seams or corners. The inside of the case is wrapped with felt to prevent scratching your $250 $170 device, so don’t fret as your system will likely look as good, or better than it would should you not use the case. This case looks extremely sharp on your system – there’s no double about that. Each piece snaps onto the top or bottom of your 3DS, and every button, slot or switch you might need to touch is readily available tanks to cuts in the design. There is one issue with this however, and that is once the case is on the charging station that we’ve all become so accustomed to using after any gametime doesn’t fit anymore. Sure, you can just as easily use the direct plug into the system – but why eliminate the need for one of the great features of the 3DS?
I did have one issue with the case however, and it’s something purely personal and likely not something that a good portion of the gaming public will run into. Sweat. My hands do tend to get a little moist when gaming, especially in extended sessions. The issue here is similar to what I see without a case, things get slippery and I find myself having to stop playing and do some wiping to clear off the sweat. Outside of this downside, and the previously mentioned inability to use the charging dock the CM4 is a great highly durable case for your 3DS. The biggest selling point is the profile of the system with the case on really doesn’t change too much – as the tough aluminum frame and felt/leatherette combo are ridiculously thin.
