Electronic Arts today unveiled not only a new Battlefield game, but one that’s completely free to download and play, as the company will support development costs through a microtransaction- and advertising-based revenue model it calls “Play 4 Free.”
The new game, Battlefield Heroes, is a cartoon-style shooter that brings classic Battlefield gameplay to a mainstream audience. Available for download here later this summer, Battlefield Heroes will feature a built-in matchmaking system.
Developed by DICE, Battlefield Heroes is a new game from the team behind Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2 and the upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company. Its cartoon-style graphics and gameplay cater to players of all skill levels, with pick-up-and-play aspects for casual gamers yet character-customization and an online meta-game for long-time Battlefield players.
EA unveiled Battlefield Heroes and its new Play 4 Free model at the Digital Life Design Conference (DLD) in Munich.
