Normally a next-gen console owner wouldn’t look to the year 2009 for gaming inspiration. Unless the inspiration came in the form of the PC game Killing Floor, that is. At this weekend’s PlayStation Experience, Tripwire Interactive announced Killing Floor 2 is in development for PS4.
Tripewire Interactive is taking the core elements that made the original PC game Killing Floor so popular and building on them for the PS4 sequel’s release. A co-operative horror FPS, Killing Floor 2 is a sci-fi shooter in which players must survive the fallout of failed corporate experiments and the wreckage left behind. Sounds like most post-apocalyptic games of late, no?
Armed with an array of deadly weapons (including a Katana!), players can team up cooperatively with up to five other players online or go it alone. Tripwire billed Killing Foor 2 as presenting players with “a bloody and chaotic nightmare” in which players will traverse a ruined world that’s infested with deadly Zeds.
Set one month after the end of the first Killing Floor, Killing Floor 2 takes place in continental Europe, where the outbreak caused by Horzine Biotech’s failed experiment has gained momentum. Civilization is in disarray, communications have failed, governments have collapsed, and military forces have been systematically eradicated. Sounds like a perfect setting for a co-op shooter.
The Zed-killing action will play out with guns and melee weapons, and the game could very well end up being gorier than any game you’ve ever seen.
Killing Floor 2 uses a proprietary “high-powered persistent blood system” that brings “new levels of fidelity to the genre.” Because apparently high-res blood and guts are cool. But Tripwire doesn’t stop there in its announcement. “Players will send entrails, severed limbs, and blood flying as they wade through hordes of enemies. But they need to watch out! If caught, enemies will rip them, and their entire party limb from limb.”
