Bronte’s classic Jane Eyre novel is getting a revamped movie interpretation this August, as Universal Studios Home Entertainment is set to release a new spin on the story via Blu-ray (and DVD) on August 16. The new Jane Eyre Blu-ray movie stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice In Wonderland, The Kids Are All Right), Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds, Hunger), Jamie Bell (The Eagle, Jumper) and Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love, Iris).
Wasikowska stars as the plain-faced and passionate Jane Eyre as she flees Thornfield House, where she worked as a governess and became the mistress for Edward Rochester (Fassbender). Determined to gain financial and emotional independence, Jane reflects upon the people and emotions that have defined her and tested her resilience since being orphaned as a child. Aided by the generous clergyman St. John Rivers (Bell) and his family, Jane recuperates in their Moor House home but remains haunted by a tumultuous past, the loss of her true love and the terrible secret that ripped them apart.
The Blu-ray release will have a host of bonus content, although most of the Blu-ray specifics have to do with functionality more than content. The Jane Eyre Blu-ray Disc will have BD-LIVE support as well as Universal’s “pocket BLU” app that lets people use their iPhone, iPod touch, Android device or computer to browse through a library of Blu-ray content and watch extras on the go. It will also include “uHEAR,” a feature by which viewers can instantly skip back a few seconds on their film and turn on subtitles to highlight what they missed. That’s it for the BD-exclusive bonus features.
The meat of Jane Eyre’s bonus features will be on both the DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions of the film. They are comprised of three stand-alone featurettes, a commentary track with director Cary Fukunaga, and deleted scenes. The featurettes are called “A Look Inside Jane Eyre,” which is the typical behind-the-scenes video; “To Score Jane Eyre,” which explains how Fukunaga and composer Dario Marianelli worked on the film’s score together; and “The Mysterious Light of Jane Eyre,” which takes a look at how the filmmakers applied lighting techniques to help set the tone throughout the movie.
