Yesterday during the Microsoft E3 2014 press conference, the Xbox One maker continually harped on “dedicated servers” as a unique selling proposition. That’s all well and good, but Sony may be on to something bigger, announcing that its PlanetSide 2 PS4 game will not require PS Plus to play.
The PlanetSide 2 PS4 version marks the first time the world’s largest first-person shooter will hit a home console. Considering the game’s scale, its online functionality is key to the entire experience.
Whereas Microsoft requires an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play games online, Sony is taking a different approach with PlanetSide 2 PS4 and not requiring the PS Plus membership to play.
Some of the biggest features the PlanetSide 2 development team is working on include Hossin, its fourth full 64-square-kilometer continent, an advanced Achievement system called Directives, player-driven continent conquest/locking, and expansions to the PlanetSide 2 Outfits systems.
All of these features will be included in the PlanetSide 2 PS4 version when it goes online later this year. And again, it will all be available in a free-to-play model that doesn’t require PlayStation Plus to play.
