Activision is getting-in on the game unveiling push today, announcing that Prototype 2 is in development and will release at a still-unknown date in 2012. The official confirmation of Prototype 2 technically came at this weekend’s Spike Video Game Awards, when its first official trailer was shown.
As seen in the Prototype 2 trailer, the open-world franchise will likely follow more on the story of Sgt. James Heller, who’s on a hell-bent mission to destroy Prototype’s original anti-hero, Alex Mercer. Our money is on Sgt. Heller being a shape-shifter himself. Further details such as that will be included in the April 2011 issue of EGM.
One unusually-brash piece of commentary Activision shared, though, was this: Prototype 2 is expected to get an M rating because “players will still be able to karate kick helicopters right out of the sky and do all sorts of really gory stuff with tendrils; but mostly because Heller is really pissed off at Alex Mercer and there’s no way to tell that story without getting a little…well…gross.”
It’s unusual to see such casual commentary in an unveiling press release.
Now, for those who missed the first game featuring shape-shifter Alex Mercer, Activision did confirm that the original Prototype is now available Xbox Live Marketplace for $29.99 and will be available tomorrow (Dec. 13) on the PS3’s PlayStation Store for the same price.
