Tecmo Koei has announced it will debut a Samurai Warriors 4 PS4 game at E3 next week. The game will be showcased alongside a version for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita as well. Tecmo also confirmed the Samurai Warriors 4 PS4 release date: October 21 this year. Pre-orders at Amazon are now open.
News of the Samurai Warriors 4 PS4 version is quite interesting, as it marks the first time the decade-old franchise will appear on Sony’s next-gen system. The series certainly has a following, as Samurai Warriors overall has sold more than 34 million units worldwide.
Tecmo Koei did not announce a Samurai Warriors 4 Xbox One or Xbox 360 version.
Samurai Warriors 4 was originally announced in 2013. Today’s announcement sheds a bit more light on the game, which will include more than 50 playable warriors, new attacks and new modes.
All told, Samurai Warriors 4 will include 55 characters, some new and some updated. Nobuyuki Sanada and Yoshitsugu Otani join the fray, along with Takatora Todo, Naotora Ii and Munenori Yagyu, who were previously only available in Japanese releases of the game. In addition to the high-definition updates, Tecmo has implemented some “major overhauls of appearance and rearrangements in battle moves” for several fan-favorite characters such as Yukimura Sanada and Nobunaga Oda.
Battles will be updated with new maneuvers including Hyper Attacks, which allow for rapid movement on the battlefield; high powered attacks; a powerful Rage Attack that can be activated when the Spirit Gauge is full; deadly finishing moves with Mighty Strikes; and the ability to mount and dismount horses seamlessly.
Samurai Warriors 4 will include new Battle Modes that support a new ability to switch between two characters in real-time, adjust morale, develop officers and use portable items as in Samurai Warriors 3. The Story Mode will let players unfold the tapestry of the Warring States era in a two-part story separated into two parts with regional storylines that tell the tale of officers in various regions such as Kyūshū and Shikoku.
A new Chronicle Mode will give players more ways to customize their experience and warriors than ever before, including a vastly upgraded Create Character system.
The Samurai Warriors 4 PS4 version will be specifically upgraded to reflect highly detailed landscapes, “true to life” lighting and shadow effects, and battlegrounds packed with significantly more enemies on screen. In addition, all modes will be playable cooperatively via Network Play across the PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, with save data shared across all three systems.
