An instant success when it debuted in 1972, Sanford and Son was the first sitcom featuring an African-American cast, with a mix of edgy, racial humor that redefined the sitcom genre and ended up being one of the 1970s most highly rated TV programs. In the show, the stubborn but lovable Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx) and his 34-year-old son Lamont (Demond Williams) run a family junk business in Watts whiel dreaming of schemes to strike it rich. The two seldom get along, with many crazy moments and Fred’s continued fake heart attacks.
Sanford and Son wasn’t the debut of Redd Foxx, but it brought his style of humor (and his memorable voice and face) to the forefront of mainstream American comedy. The entire Sanford and Son TV series, all six seasons of it, is finally coming home to DVD via a massive 18-disc box set. And we just so happen to be giving one of them away, courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
