Tetris for PS4 and Xbox One. The concept doesn’t sound all that “next-gen” at first blush, but that’s exactly one of the games Ubisoft is hard at work developing. If anyone can pull it off, it’s Ubisoft, which seems to have a firm grasp on the now-current console generation. And here’s the coolest thing: Tetris for PS4 and Xbox One will likely ship this year.
Today Ubisoft and The Tetris Company announced a partnership to develop Tetris for digital distribution (Xbox Live and PlayStation Store). The Tetris franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, having sold hundreds of millions of units worldwide across 50-plus platforms since its 1984 launch.
Tetris is one of the most widely recognized video games of all time, having more than 385 million paid mobile downloads and more than one billion games played online per month. The Tetris for PS4 and Xbox One arrangement with Ubisoft is the latest in a series of licensing deals Tetris Holding has had with Electronic Arts, Hasbro, Konami and Nintendo, among others.
Tetris for PS4 and Xbox One will be one of a still-small handful of “smaller” titles on the next-gen systems. We’d call it “casual,” but that term doesn’t do service to the surprisingly adrenaline-pumping feeling you get in the later levels of the game.
