If you’re sitting on the subway in need of some retro-style RPG action, you may want to take a look at a new turn-based strategy game called Izar, which has just released for all iOS platforms (iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch). Set in an ancient, mythical kingdom, Izar tells the story of a knight who returns home after a long journey to find his castle partly destroyed and his army scattered. The role-playing aspect of the game involves spells, quests and journeys to help restore the lost symbols of Magic, Arrow and Sword to the castle. Whenever combat is required, the game switches to turn-based, tactical mode.
Played in landscape mode, the game launches with a parchment scroll that establishes the story and goals of the game. The game lets players recruit knights, elf archers, dwarfs, paladins and beholders for their army, each with his own Health, Attack values and Price. There is a wide variety of armor and weapons available to increase the power of soldiers under special, specified circumstances.
Izar also includes numerous danger-filled locales that present unique challenges and rewards, and castle upgrades can bestow additional capabilities to the player’s troops. Games may be saved and resumed at a later time, allowing for protracted, strategic gameplay.
The $2.99 app requires iOS 3.2 or later (iOS 4.3 tested) and is 27.8 MB in size.
