Valve today released five free Source MODs via Steam, giving owners of any Source-based game the chance to tweak and create levels to their heart’s content. Releasing the mods is good but not surprising news; one of PC gaming’s most popular shooters, Counter-Strike, was created using a Half-Life mod.
Once installed, the free Source MODs will appear in the Steam “My Games” list and receive automatic updates like other Steam games. In addition to letting players customize game content, the MODs also use Steamworks, which lets game creators incorporate stat tracking and better integrate their creation with the Steam community.
The original Steam MOD squad is comprised of “Age of Chivalry,” “D.I.P.R.I.P.,” “Insurgency,” “Synergy” and “Zombie Panic.”
