KOEI today confirmed speculation that Warriors Orochi 2 would have next-gen exclusivity, as the company officially unveiled Warriors Orochi 2 and announced that it will appear in North America only on Xbox 360, not PlayStation 3.
The game will, however, appear on the PlayStation 2 when it releases in September.
The biggest upgrade in Warriors Orochi 2 is probably a new two-player Versus Mode in which players can participate in four different games, including “Tag Team matches that pit individual fighters in head-to-head combat. The popular The popular Team Battle System from the original Warriors Orochi will return, letting players create their own three-person fighting team.
Warriors Orochi 2 will feature more than 90 playable characters from both the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchises, including Samurai Warriors 2 Xtreme Legends. It will also include new characters from Chinese and Japanese history. Fortunately, the plot seems to marry these divergent characters and backgrounds:
Shattering time and space, the venomous Serpent King Orochi kidnapped the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors in scheme to test his might. The heroes eventually defeated Orochi and his menacing army. While the slain Orochi lies in the netherworld, a mysterious alliance is hatching an otherworldly plan so that the Serpent King may rise again. Now a new group of warriors must join forces in an effort to stop this evil resurrection.
Staid and formulaic? Yeah, but that doesn’t mean the game won’t have a good following. After all, KOEI has shipped a combined 1.5 million units worldwide of the original Warriors Orochi for the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Windows PC and PSP.
