The Dallas Cowboys and St. Louis Rams have a history of meeting early in the NFL season. This year is no different, as today’s Cowboys / Rams game goes down in Week 3 at a time when many players are still working out kinks. Like, for example, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who sat out Wednesday’s practice with back tightness.
On the surface Romo hasn’t had a bad first two weeks. The oft-maligned QB has completed 42 of 66 passes so far with 457 yards and two touchdowns, and the Cowboys have the seventh-ranked total offense going into today’s Rams game. But that high rating is due more to the rushing exploits of running back DeMarco Murray than anything Romo has done.
Murray last week ran for 169 yards and a touchdown in Dallas’ 26-10 win over the Titans, bringing his season total to 285 yards. Backup RB Lance Dunbar has only contributed 27 yards in two weeks, but Murray’s presence has still given Dallas the NFL’s second-ranked rushing attack and given fans reason to watch today’s Cowboys game.
If Romo’s injuries and performance this season have been troubling, it’s funny to think the Rams have found solace in quarterback Austin Davis. Davis wasn’t in St. Louis’ long-term plans this year, but injuries have thrust him into the starting role. He’s delivered 427 yards passing and a better completion percentage than Romo, but that’s sort of damning praise.
Although both Dallas and St. Louis are 1-1 going into today’s Cowboys / Rams game, Dallas is certainly favored. The Cowboys lead the Rams in essentially every statistical category, and even if Romo doesn’t play well (or at all) the Cowboys still have Dez Bryant to deliver big plays with whoever throws him the ball. This season Bryant has caught 14 passes for 158 yards, and the Rams defense isn’t exactly poised to stop him.
