For all the Super Bowl and preseason talk about Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, it’s Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray who’s leading the league in rushing through five weeks. The Cowboys enter today’s Seahawks game with four straight victories, but playing in Seattle’s home stadium will be the toughest test Tony Romo, Murray and the rest of the Dallas Cowboys have faced so far this season.
DeMarco Murray last week carried the ball 31 times against the Houston Texans, a career high, rushing for 136 yards in the Cowboys’ 20-17 overtime win. That put his season totals at 130 carries and 670 yards, both tops in the NFL. In fact, Murray is on pace to set a league record for touches in a season.
It’s not like he’s had to carry the load himself. Tony Romo has essentially silenced his critics for good this season, racking up 1,260 yards and nine touchdowns but, more importantly, coming through in the clutch on several occasions. Last week’s 324-yard outburst against the Texans included just such a clutch performance, as Romo connected on an awkward 37-yard pass to Dez Bryant late in the game.
Romo and Murray will face a tough test in Seattle today. The Seahawks “Legion of Boom” has altered several quarterbacks’ plans already this season, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones went so far as to say this week that Seahawks DB Richard Sherman can’t be allowed to force Romo to play on just one half of the field. The Seahawks rushing defense, meanwhile, is the best in the NFL, allowing just 62.2 yards per game.
Yet it’s the Cowboys 21st-ranked defense that should be more concerned. Seattle is ranked fifth in points per game with 27.5, and their rushing game is first with 167.2 yards/game behind Lynch and QB Russell Wilson. Wilson rushed for a career-high 122 yards and a touchdown in the Seahawks’ 27-17 Monday Night win over the Redskins. He also completed 18 of 24 passes for 201 yards and two TDs.
