The NY Jets have lost three straight games, their quarterback has been fined for cursing at a fan, and they head into today’s San Diego Chargers game on the road as a 6.5-point underdog. Yet even as Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is playing lights-out this season, the Jets have reason for hope.
Rivers this season has completed 96 of 137 passes for 1,155 yards and nine touchdowns. Commentators like ESPN’s Colin Cowherd are calling him the league’s premier QB. Yet Rivers is 2-2 all-time against the Jets, having completed seven touchdowns against five interceptions and has been sacked seven times against them.
The Jets currently own the NFL’s third-best defense, though their strength is defending the run, where San Diego wasn’t going to be a threat anyway. Against the pass the Jets defense allows 228 yards per game. That still seems to be giving NY fans hope, as is news that wide receiver Eric Decker is likely to play today after pulling himself out of practice Thursday with hamstring tightness.
While starting QB Geno Smith will keep hearing questions about whether Jets backup Michael Vick could get things going, San Diego has no such controversy. Last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philip Rivers threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns. Those totals could be even higher when we watch the Jets Chargers game free live today.
