The new Star Wars movie trailer hit theaters Friday, giving would-be fans of Episode 7 a glimpse of 88 seconds of actual movie clips. The new Episode 7 trailer was only shown in select theaters in the United States and Canada, making it a truly “black Friday” for anyone not in those cities.
Fortunately, Disney and LucasFilm also uploaded the official teaser trailer to YouTube and the Star Wars website too, so fans worldwide can watch the new Star Wars movie trailer online as well. And yes, you will absolutely want to.
Though the Star Wars Episode 7 movie clips are all brief, they give some great glimpses into the perhaps darker or at least more-intense nature of The Force Awakens. They also show JJ Abrams signature lens flares and dynamic camera angles, particularly in the scene with the Millennium Falcon.
As you watch the new Star Wars movie trailer, don’t bother looking for Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia or any of the original trilogy’s characters. Though they’re all scheduled to play a role in Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens, none of them is shown in these brief movie clips.
You will, however, see a Stormtrooper without his mask on (perhaps one of Episode 7’s main stars will have a costume change a la Luke and Han in A New Hope?), an assemblage of Stormtroopers, a body-less droid, a Sith with a sweet red lightsaber and what appears to be a heroine (Leia’s daughter?) cruising away on some sort of landspeeder-meets-speeder-bike hybrid.
Yet the best part of the whole Star Wars Episode 7 teaser trailer is at the end. While the Star Wars score starts to ramp-up in the background, a squadron of three X-Wing fighters cruises just feet over a large lake or ocean, the Millennium Falcon does some dramatic maneuvers over a sandy desert and then cuts between two attacking TIE fighters.
In other words, it’s official: Star Wars is back! No more of those Jar Jar-ified, overly CG’d abominations that sullied the franchise in all three prequels. JJ Abrams was skewered for leading both a rebirth of Star Trek and Star Wars, but after you watch the new Star Wars movie trailer online or in a theater (if you’re lucky enough to do so), you’ll be very glad he’s invovlved.
The new Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens will fly into theaters in December 2015. I wasn’t expecting much from these original 88 seconds of footage in the teaser trailer. Now that I’ve watched the trailer four times, I can say that it sure appears this is going to be the new Star Wars movie I was looking for.
