Kansas City was among the last undefeated teams in the NFL last year, but even amid that success people would’ve looked at you odd if you’d put Alex Smith and Tom Brady in the same category. This season the argument holds ground. The two quarterbacks face-off in Monday Night Football tonight as the New England Patriots hit the road to take on the Kansas City Chiefs on MNF on ESPN. And frankly, Smith has the upper hand.
Through three weeks the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has completed 64 of 102 pass attempts for 643 yards and 4 touchdowns. Although he’s led the Chiefs to just the 30th-ranked passing game, that’s one spot above Brady’s work with the Patriots.
By comparison, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has gone 67-for-114 for 632 yards and three TDs. In fact, Brady has just a 58.8% completion rate, has been sacked seven times and averages 5.5 yards per pass attempt.
Unfortunately for the Chiefs, Smith has a negative QB PAA, meaning he’s contributed fewer points than the average quarterback. Brady’s, meanwhile, is positive. One of the results is that as you watch MNF online free or live on TV tonight, you’ll see the Patriots at 2-1 and the Chiefs at 1-2.
However, as you prepare to watch Monday Night Football, know that Smith may have some hope in tonight’s Patriots game. Although the Pats won last week, Raiders rookie QB David Carr threw six passes in the direction of Patriots All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis. Carr completed five of those passes for 63 yards.
Revis has one interception this season but has allowed opposing QBs to complete almost 50% of their passes to him (8 of 17) for 103 yards and a touchdown. The rest of the Patriots defense picked up the slack. Through three weeks the Patriots have the NFL’s top pass defense, allowing just 168.7 yards per game through the air.
