Eastbourne, United Kingdom – Myrix Studios has released their brand new game, Astronomica! on the iPad and iPhone app stores. This fun little 2D obstacle dodging game brings the player more than the ordinary experience in this genre, introducing a mission structure, unlockable extra content and Game Center achievements for gamers to strive for.
The story of Astronomica! takes place is in the distant future, a time where mankind has become dependent on a rare gas called Myron, a resource which is practically depleted in the immediate area around Earth. Captain Turner and her brave crew have embarked on a mission to the Astronomica system to harvest as much Myron as they can. However, alien forces have set up a number of traps and hazards in an attempt to halt the great captain in her tracks. The player must dodge these alien traps in a number of different scenarios whilst trying to harvest as much Myron as possible.
Players can explore three beautiful environments within the Astronomica system; the frozen asteroids of Isa, the lush forest planet of Primus and the intrepid fire moon Infernis. Each zone is navigated using a unique ship, each with its own physical traits, playing style and music.
Each of the three zones consists of 10 missions to complete as well as a freeplay mode where highscores can be posted to GameCenter. The zones have a clear level of progression and difficulty curve, with Isa being the easiest of the three areas and Infernis being the hardest. Despite this, the player can choose to complete the campaign on either of these three planets in any particular order and the freeplay mode for these planets will be unlocked from the start.
The gameplay itself is relatively simple. The player must tap and hold their finger on the screen of their device to move their ship up and down. There are four power ups to collect, each giving an extra life via a shield and other powers waiting to be discovered.
Using this simple control method, the objective of the game is to either gather as much Myron as possible or go on as far as you can, dependant on the particular scenario you are playing. Along the way, the player will face a barrage of traps including zappers and missiles.
The game includes a shop where collected Myron can be traded for upgrades and continues, giving the player a greater chance to continue their adventure.
Astronomica! will also include three unlockable mini-games as well as a concept art gallery and music player, all of which are included in the game itself. The three mini-games included are the Astronomica! Track Builder, Memory Match and Space Porter.
The Astronomica! Track Builder allows the player to make small, 30 second music loops using 6 different instrument sections (accompaniment, percussion, synth, melody, ambience and bass) over 6 different musical themes inspired by the music and imagery of the game. Due to the melody at its core being the same for each theme, players can mix and match different instruments over different themes.
Memory Match puts the player’s memory to the test challenging them to match up card pairs over three different difficulties.
Space Porter is a small race against the clock where the player must tap their screen repeatedly to get the UMC worker to pull the lever and extract the Myron Gas from the large canister beside him.
