The series that kickstarted the first-person shooter genre has caught-up with the present, as Wolfenstein: The New Order is now available. The game, which has released on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, is the latest chapter in a Nazi-blasting franchise that seldom loses its luster.
Although it’s the latest entry in a storied franchise, Wolfenstein: The New Order does a bit of “reimagining” of the series. Set in an alternate version of the 1960s, players take on the role of war hero B.J. Blazkowicz. That part remains the same. After awakening from a 14-year coma he discovers that the Nazi’s, armed with a mysterious advanced technology, have won World War II and now rule the world with an iron fist. That doesn’t sound all that different either.
However, BJ now has the help of a small group of resistance fighters, giving Wolfenstein: The New Order less of a solitary feel and much more epic. Players will trek across Europe on BJ’s personal mission to bring down the Nazi war machine that has conquered Earth — and beyond.
Yes, Bethesda went there. Again.
The game does offer a deeper game narrative than you’re used to seeing in a Wolfenstein game, and the deliberately paced nature of some cutscenes shows a level of patience and quality not often seen in the series. The guns, always a hit with Wolfenstein fans, have been overhauled as well, and the sci-fi edge a deep narrative in some instances give the latest Wolfenstein outing a decidedly modern feel.
In other words, Wolfenstein: The New Order really does live up to its name. You can find the game in your local retailer today.
